The 2006 vintage made an unforgettable start. Flooding kicked off the New Year, which made for great news headlines, but caused no damage to dormant vines. Cool, wet weather delayed bud break by a few weeks, but sunshine returned by early June. In July, a record-setting heat wave lasted about ten days, which helped the vines catch up to a "normal" place in the typical growing season. Mild weather returned in August, continuing throughout the fall, which allowed for moderatley paced, deliberate ripening and a long harvest period.

S.L.V. soils are made up, in part, of volcanic earth which contributes the "fire"-like qualities of great structure, concentration, and intensity.

A rich perfume of Bing cherry, blackberry, and cassis mingles with savory aromas of licorice, cedar, and toasted almonds. Similar flavors coat the palate with additional notes of cocoa powder and vanilla. The wine is generous in character and framed by silky, smooth tannins.
